How to reach Heidelberg and ARI
Heidelberg is a beautiful city in the Southern part of Germany. The location of the ARI is very close to the historic old town of Heidelberg.
In the following, it is described how you can reach Heidelberg and the ARI via airplane, train or car.
Airplane
The next airport is Frankfurt/Main, though Stuttgart airport is not much further away and also connected by rail. From Frankfurt airport there are good train connections to Heidelberg (in most cases via Mannheim). Note that Frankfurt airport now has two train stations, which are separately signposted, and both have ticket offices:
- the long-distance train station (rather long walk), during daytime all long-distance trains (such as ICE, IC) leave from there, for example there are direct trains to Mannheim.
- the regional train station (this is in fact the old train station, and it is just a short walk, down to the basement in front of Terminal 1, concourse B of the airport): there you find frequent local trains (S-Bahn and others) to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (city main station), and during the night ALL trains depart from here.
- there is also a convenient Lufthansa Airport Shuttle Bus to Heidelberg (and back), hotel Crowne Plaza (from there one can take a taxi and get to all other Heidelberg hotels and to ARI in max. 10-15 minutes). Booking is possible on the spot at the driver, or with the flight ticket.
- the most convenient way of getting from Frankfurt Airport to Heidelberg (and back) is via the TLS door-to-door shuttle. The shuttle can be booked on-line and requires bookings at least 4 days in advance. The shuttle driver will wait for you at the airport and will bring you directly to your hotel. The cost for a one-way trip is currently 33 Euros.
Railway
Heidelberg can be reached by ICE, IC and regional trains (RE, S). The next main traffic junction is Mannheim at a distance of only 20km. There are frequent, quick long-distance connections by rail to Mannheim. From there you can get frequent local rail services to Heidelberg (duration 10-20 minutes, frequency about 30 minutes, inquire at station to find correct platform and trains).

Car
By car you will usually enter Heidelberg from Autobahn (motorway) A656 (coming from Heidelberger Kreuz). From there follow signs in the direction "Kopfklinik" or "Neuenheimer Feld" or "Zoo" to cross the Neckar river on the western bridge. After Neckar turn right at the second traffic light into Moenchhofstrasse. ARI is on the left-hand side of Moenchhofstrasse, after about 1 km. To get into ARI premises: Turn left into Erwin-Rohde-Strasse, turn left two more times, then enter ARI towars the left, immediately before you would return to Moenchhofstrasse again. Attention: A quite extended area around ARI is a zone of restricted parking, where you may stay only if you use a German-style Parkscheibe, and only for two hours.
From the main station Heidelberg to the ARI
Use tram number 5 (direction: Weinheim) from the railway station to Kussmaulstrasse (duration 10 minutes, frequency about 10 minutes). From Kussmaulstrasse walk to the left (west) into Weberstrasse and go straight ahead to the end of this street, then turn left into Werderstrasse. After about 50 meters there is the ARI on the left side.
