Eva Grebel elected member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina


Prof. Dr. Eva Grebel, Director of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut of the Zentrum für Astronomie der Universität Heidelberg (ZAH) as well as head of the research group "Galactic Archaeology" and the DFG Collaborative Research Center "The Milky Way System" has been elected a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in recognition of her scientific achievements. She will be a member of the "Physics" section.

Eva Grebel received her PhD in astronomy from the University of Bonn in 1995. After postdoctoral positions in Germany and abroad, she received one of the prestigious Hubble Fellowships at the University of Washington, Seattle. In 2000 she became a research group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg. In 2003, she was appointed professor of observational astronomy at the University of Basel, where she headed the Astronomical Institute. In 2007 she became Professor of Astronomy at the University of Heidelberg and Director of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut. Eva Grebel was, among other things, a member of the "Astronomy Working Group" of the European Space Agency ESA and of the Senate of the German Research Foundation. She has received numerous awards for her research on galactic archaeology, including the Johann Wempe Prize, the Lautenschläger Research Prize and the Hector Science Prize. She was also elected to two other science academies, namely the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Hector Fellow Academy.

The Leopoldina intends to award Eva Grebel the  membership certificate next March,  if the corona situation allows for it.
