Gaia Sky 2.0.2 comes by default with a subset of DR2 selected using some criteria on the relative error of parallaxes. The default dataset criteria are 20% for bright stars (gmag ≤ 13) and 0.5% for faint stars (gmag > 13). This yields a catalog of about 7.5 million stars. You can download larger catalogs below.

Installation instructions

Windows installer

Download the installer and double-click on it. Follow the on-screen instructions. In Windows 8/10 SmartScreen may block the installation. If so, just click on More info and then on Run anyway.

macOS installer

Download and run the DMG file. Then follow the installer instructions.

TGZ installation

Uncompress the archive in POSIX systems using:

tar -zxvf gaiasky-[version].tar.gz

DEB package

Run the following in a terminal:

sudo dpkg -i gaiasky-[version].deb

RPM package

Run the following in a terminal:

sudo yum install gaiasky-[version].rpm

AUR package

Use any tool capable of installing packages from AUR. The package name is gaiasky. For example, with trizen:

trizen -S gaiasky

Additional Gaia DR2 catalogs (version 2.0.1+)

Here you can find larger catalogs for download, based on Gaia DR2 data. The 'criteria' column contains the two selection criteria used in the catalog, for bright (gmag <= 13) and faint (gmag > 13) stars in parallax relative error. The Default catalog already comes bundled with Gaia Sky.

Download the desired catalog and extract it in the $GAIASKY_INSTALL_DIR/data/octree/dr2/ folder (create if it does not exist), where $GAIASKY_INSTALL_DIR is your Gaia Sky installation folder, not the config folder in the user directory!. Then download the catalog descriptor json file and put it in $GAIASKY_INSTALL_DIR/data. Finally, go to the preferences window in Gaia Sky, choose the new catalog under the Data tab and restart.

This catalog is still in beta and offered only as a preview. Catalog with 1.33 billion stars (all 5-parameter sources in DR2) based on the bayesian distances paper by Bailer-Jones et al.. We are still working on getting a good artifact-free LOD structure with this catalog, so bear in mind this is not the final product.

High resolution texture packs

The installation packages do not include high resolution textures to keep the file size at bay. However, we offer a high resolution texture pack download with 4K and 8K textures which must be extracted in $GAIASKY_INSTALL_DIR/data/tex.
